3 Things That Made Me Go Hmmmm during "Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music"
No preamble, I'm just getting right into it...
The Lonely Island receives an entire segment chronicling their rise to popularity and how they “changed the game” in comedy; completely glossing over the fact that their success only comes after they cloak their early-2000’s man-child personas in rap and hip-hop.
Justin Timberlake swears that “Dick in a Box” was just a silly spoof on other corny R&B bands (insinuated to be Color Me Badd by the editing).
*Insert side eye here*
But then, somehow, his idea of parody does its best to sound like a straight-up Jodeci record. What’s good JT?Interestingly, not one moment is spent talking about “The Barry Gibb Talk Show.”
Also, Timberlake’s excessive airtime was just entirely unnecessary. (When are we going to stop letting him run with his own self-serving narratives?)
Not ONE single clip of Janet Jackson performing or hosting on SNL. Not ONE. Not even in any montage. Janet is the only member of the entire Jackson family musical dynasty to ever grace that stage (twice). So, please enjoy these (before they get removed.)
Note: #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay is Sunday February 9, (aka Super Bowl Sunday)
Quite frankly, I never expected this stuff to slip by on Questlove’s watch, but this crap is why my “Portraits of Excellence” project exists. Black culture is often consumed for clout but conveniently ignored when it’s time to give credit where it’s due.
30 years in the making, please join the celebration. portraitsofexcellence.com
Let me just also state for the record that N*SYNC doesn't have THIS Jam & Lewis classic in their catalog. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkGuSHhUXy0
